Dr. Julius Francis Woiso has over 25 years of experience in the conservation, research, capacity development, and management of coastal and marine environments in the western Indian Ocean (WIO) region. Over the years, he has been a skilled networker and has developed strategic partnerships with different organizations and stakeholders, including local community groups, scientists, practitioners, UN organizations, and governments.

He is experienced in managing large projects funded by agencies such as USAID, SIDA, Norad, and GEF, which required the involvement of different stakeholders at different stages. Most recently, Julius played a crucial role in establishing a Platform for Science to Policy Platform under the framework of the Nairobi Convention. As a trainer and educator, Julius led several regional trainings in Marine Protected Areas management, marine spatial planning, blue economy, and shoreline change.

He has also led the development and implementation of public awareness of marine and biodiversity by producing educational materials. Currently, Julius serves as a Senior Lecturer at the School of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Technology (SoAF), where he is leading two initiatives: the Norad-funded project, Samaki Fisheries, nutrition, livelihoods, gender and rights in Tanzania, which, among others, provided full scholarships to 19 Masters and PhD students and the Tanzania Commission of Science and Technology (COSTECH)-funded project ‘Small fish for food and nutrition security in Africa (SmallFish4Food)’
